Easter Chicks
Homemade Play Dough
I received my play dough recipe from my oldest son's Kindergarten teacher and loved it! So this is the recipe I follow:
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tarter
1 cup water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Food color of choice
Directions:
Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a pot. Add other ingredients, except food color, and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until thick. Drop the dough on waxed paper or foil and allow to cool. After cooled, knead the dough and add a few drops of food coloring until you get the desired color. (Tip: If your dough seems a little sticky add extra flour and continue to knead until you get the proper consistency.) You can also add flavored extract, such as lemon, vanilla, or peppermint to excite your child's sense of smell. Remember to store in a cool airtight container. To help the dough last even longer, consider storing in the refrigerator. That's if you have any extra space.
Easter Chicks
(What You'll Need: Clear plastic bags, small rubber bands, orange construction paper, brown pipe cleaners, googly eyes, rubber cement glue)
For my Easter chicks, I filled small clear plastic bags with my yellow play dough. Next, I used small rubber bands to tie the bags tight so that the dough would not dry out. I then cut out orange triangles for the beaks from a piece of construction paper. (Tip: Use the folded edge of a piece of paper so that you have two nice even triangles, a diamond, with with a fold down the middle for an open beak.)
The rest was easy. I actually let my oldest son decorate the chicks, gluing on the small googly eyes and beaks. While I tied the pipe cleaners around the rubber band to add a little extra character.
The Easter chicks were very cute so I may try this again next year with pink bunnies! Pick different colored play dough and think of all the different animals you may be able to make for the occasion!
